Dire Straits

Dire Straits
Smoky late-night bar shuffle for the lonely drinker.
A late 70s, rock shuffle production with funky touches, there are obvious comparisons to be made with JJ Cale and early Springsteen. Knopfler's gruff but characterful vocals lend a Dylanesque quality to the songs which are underpinned by his distinctive guitar playing. Despite a million plus plays, Sultans of Swing still stands out from the crowd. iI features a compelling story and is deceptively groovy, Knopfler's Saturday Night Fever. Wild West End though is perhaps the most telling track here, featuring the wry observations of an outsider, watching the world and the girls he desires, go by. Romantic, in a melancholy, isolated sort of way, there's a late night bar groove to proceedings, even if it's one of a single man gazing longingly over his cappuccino. Bob Dylan was so impressed by the album he signed the Knof up for his christian-rock epic 'Slow Train Coming'.
