Love Over Gold
Widescreen Panoramas
Despite having just 5 songs, this is album is truly cinematic in scale (the first song Telegraph Road is 14 minutes long!). Epic, had Knopfler been listening to The Wall? If the previous albums were 'late night efforts' this must be a 4.00 am sort of affair. Knopfler does takes a break from his romantic preoccupations with Industrial Disease an early sketch for Walk of Life with an Ian-Dury-does-Dylan rap on urban life. That aside its business as usual but even more languid, laconic and lengthy. Lots of guitar solos and no obvious 'hits', but an overall mood is successfully conveyed. Private Investigator deserves special mention for its delicate amosphere of dissapointed loneliness, love gong wrong, "Scarred for life, no compensation". Ow!
