Making Movies
Solid rock romance.
There's a renewed focus and sharpness about the album as Knopfler ditches his ineffectual brother from the band and hires a pianist. This creates a new dynamism to the groups sound and emphasises similarities with Springsteen circa Born to Run (all be it minus his rawkus rocky bombast). As the album title suggests Knopfler fully embraces his story telling-lyrical style, penning in the process what is perhaps his defining moment as a songwriter, the Shakespeare-goes-Croydon Romeo and Juliet, showcasing his romantic message perfectly - "You and me babe, how about it?". The cringeworthy last track Les Boys with it's music-hall, camp clichés is definitely an end to forget though.
